Everything You Need to Know Before Getting Lash Extensions!
Tired of daily mascara application or dealing with frizzy lashes from lifts? Admiring those lashes on others and wondering how they do it? If you’re reading this, you’ve probably been thinking about getting lash extensions, and we’re here to guide you through everything you need to know!
In today’s fast-paced world, many women are turning to lash extensions for that perfect, hassle-free look. Lash extensions save time and effort, so you can feel polished every day without the struggle of daily makeup routines. However, with so many different terms and styles floating around on social media, it can be confusing to figure out exactly what you want. Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered with all the details you need to make an informed decision.
What Are Lash Extensions?
Lash extensions are semi-permanent lashes that are applied directly to your natural lashes. With proper care, lash extensions require minimal maintenance, allowing you to live your everyday life without the need for frequent touch-ups. When applied correctly, they won’t damage your natural lashes.
It’s important to note that all human lashes go through a natural shedding cycle every 6-8 weeks, so you’ll need infills every 2 to 4 weeks to keep your lashes looking full and fresh.
Lash Retention Tips:
Your lash retention (meaning how long they’ll last) depends on your lifestyle and how you care for your lashes. For example, clients who wear minimal makeup and clean their lashes daily tend to have longer retention, while those who wear heavy makeup may need more frequent infills. Infills are priced based on your lash retention; the more the artist needs to fill, the more you’ll need to pay.
How Are Lash Extensions Applied?
The application of lash extensions is a delicate process that requires precision and skill. Here’s how it works:
- The lash artist begins with a consultation to discuss your desired look.
- Next, they will prep your lashes by thoroughly cleaning them (because extensions won't stick to dirty lashes!) and then map out the appropriate lash lengths.
- Using two tweezers, the artist isolates each natural lash and applies the extension by dipping it in adhesive and placing it on your natural lash.
It’s crucial to choose a skilled lash artist who is experienced in the process.
Lash Styles: Which One Is Right for You?
The right lash style depends on your eye shape and personal preferences. Your lash artist will recommend the best style, but ultimately, the decision is yours. Here are the three main styles:
- Cat Eye: Longest lengths at the outer corners, elongating the eyes.
- Kitten Eye: Longest lengths at the brow arch, lifting the eyes.
- Doll Eye: Longest lengths in the centre, opening up the eyes.
Each style can be as natural or dramatic as you like, depending on the length and volume chosen.
What Are the Different Types of Lash Extensions?
Lash extensions vary in material, length, diameter, and curl, all of which contribute to the final look.
Lash Materials
- PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate): The highest-quality material for extensions, sourced from Korea. We only use PBT for our lash extensions due to its superior hold and long lifespan.
Lash Diameters
Lash extensions also vary in diameter, which refers to the thickness and weight of each lash strand:
- Thinner Diameters (0.05): Lighter and usually contain more strands per fan. Available from 5D to 14D.
- Medium Diameters (0.07): Perfect medium thickness and range from 3D to 6D.
- Structure Diameters (0.15): Heavier and darker, ranging from 2D to 5D.
- Thicker Diameters (0.15): Heavier and more suitable for classic sets, which are a 1:1 application (one extension per natural lash).
What Does 2D, 5D, 8D, etc. Mean?
- 2D, 3D, 4D: These terms refer to the number of lash strands in each fan. For example, 2D means two strands per fan, while 3D means three strands, and so on.
Classic, Volume, Mega, and Russian Lashes: What’s the Difference?
These names refer to lash styles, usually based on the diameter of the lashes used:
- Classic Lashes: One extension per natural lash (commonly 0.15mm).
- Volume Lashes: Lighter extensions (usually 0.07mm) are used to create fuller, fluffier lashes.
- Mega Lashes: The fullest look, created with even thinner lashes (often 0.05mm).
- Russian Lashes: The most dramatic look, made with ultra-thin extensions (0.03mm).
Lash Lengths
Lash extensions come in lengths ranging from 7mm to 17mm. For a natural look, we recommend starting with 7-9mm at the inner corners of the eyes. If you’re unsure of your ideal length, it’s best to stick to 12-13mm and then adjust as you attend your infill appointments.
Tip: If you wear glasses, keep in mind that longer lashes may touch your lenses.
Lash Curls
There are six different lash curls, with C and D being the most popular. D Curl is the curlier option, while C Curl offers a gentler curl, ideal for clients with smaller or more mature eyes.
Caring for Your Lash Extensions
To keep your lashes looking their best, follow these aftercare tips:
- Avoid water and steam for the first 24 hours (unless your lash artist uses a lash bonder).
- No oily products, face creams, or eye makeup (oil breaks down the adhesive).
- Avoid mascara and eyeliner, as they can cause residue buildup.
- Don’t touch your lashes with your fingers—use a lash brush to avoid damage.
- Clean your lashes daily with an approved lash cleaner.
- Brush lashes gently morning and night.
For side sleepers, 3D lash bras or sleep masks can prevent damage to your lashes.
