How to Choose the Right Lash Style for Your Client

When applying eyelash extensions, it might seem like one style fits all, but in reality, every eye shape is unique. As a professional eyelash extension technician, it's essential to customise your lash styles, lengths, and diameters to suit each client's eye shape and desired look. This guide will walk you through the process of selecting and customising lash styles for your clients.

Start with a Client Consultation

When a new client books an appointment, they should first complete a new client form. This helps gather important personal information and note any health risks that may contraindicate the service. Once the administrative work is done, it's time for a client consultation.

Consultation Steps:

  1. Ask the client to look directly at you.
  2. Assess the general eye shape, keeping in mind that all eye shapes are variations of the almond shape.
  3. Examine the eyelids and brows to determine where the longest lash lengths should sit.
  4. Inquire about the client's sleeping side, as this can influence how their lashes should be mapped.

Next, focus on the outer eye. Pay attention to the following:

  • Do the pupil and eyelid corner meet in a straight line?
  • Are the eyelid corners rounded or pointy, or do they appear narrower?
  • Is there more space around the iris?

These observations will help you identify the eye shape and determine the best lash style for your client.

The 4 Main Eye Shapes and Lash Style Recommendations

1. Large / Rounded Eyes

Round eyes are characterized by a circular shape with equal height and length, often with more space between the eyes and a prominent lid crease. The goal is to elongate the eyes and balance their shape.

Recommended Lash Style:

  • Cat Eye (longer lengths at the outer corners)

Lash Mapping:
8mm | 9mm | 10mm | 11mm | 12mm | 13mm | 14mm | 15mm
Aim: To elongate the eye and add definition.

2. Slanted / Turned Down Eyes

Downturned eyes have a downward angle and appear smaller when the client smiles. This shape can result from genetics or aging. The goal is to lift the eyes and create a more youthful look.

Recommended Lash Style:

  • Kitten Eye (longer lengths at the brow arch)

Lash Mapping:
8mm | 9mm | 10mm | 11mm | 12mm | 13mm | 14mm | 13mm | 12mm
Aim: To lift the eyes, focusing on the brow arch to give a more open appearance.

3. Small / Deep Set, Hooded, or Monolid Eyes

Deep-set or hooded eyes are positioned under the brow bone with the crease above the lash line. Monolids, where the eyelid reaches the lash line, are also common. For these shapes, the goal is to widen and open the eyes.

Recommended Lash Style:

  • Doll Eye (longest in the centre)

Lash Mapping:
8mm | 9mm | 10mm | 11mm | 12mm | 11mm | 10mm | 9mm | 8mm
Aim: To create the illusion of a larger, more open eye shape.

4. Almond Eye Shapes

Almond-shaped eyes are oval with pointed, straight edges and are balanced in proportion. This versatile shape can work with any lash style, depending on the client’s preferences.

5. Upturned Eye Shapes

Upturned eyes have outer corners that are naturally higher, mimicking a cat-eye shape. This shape can be styled with either a natural cat-eye or kitten lash style to enhance the upward angle.

Recommended Lash Style:

  • Cat Eye or Kitten Eye (emphasising the natural upward angle)
